If you must have a competition, have a competition to see who can save the most. what I do is every time I make a purchase, I asked for $1 back in quarters. The quarters are put in a big, empty water jug and then used for some sort of family outing (i.e. ice cream, a nice dinner, or a trip if you wait long enough).

I am assuming you mixed up what you were trying to say after, "Try to Give instead of Take " where you wrote:
This works much better than when both parties are doing their best to take as much as possible.

Learning the giving part can be really tough and one thing that has helped me is to give EVERYTHING you and your spouse buy to each other. So, when you are shopping together, always pay for the things the other person is actually wanting by offering to buy it FOR them. Say your wife is buying some new shoes, offer to buy them for her. If one spouse needs a new tool, plant or book, or movie, offer to buy it for the other person instead of them buying it for them self. Its simple, but helps to learn that attitude of giving.
