This post is a really good reminder of keeping your destination and your progress at the front of your mind.

I would have LOVED that kind of pre-college educational setup! This not only work with studies , it works in gym , games etc. If you know your goal and publish it , you will definitely work towards it. I am working towards a goal and my friends and trainers know it , I am sure I will reach my goal.
Cheers,
Andy.

Thats a motivating post! Have a plan for 6 months, 1 year, 5 years, etc etc.

Great points. The one I thought was most important was keep the end in mind. To this day (and this is after getting a PhD) my greatest weaknesses is project planning. I struggle with every part of the process: defining goals (I often find it difficult to envision what a final product will look like due to uncertainty about what I will discover along the way), breaking the process down into smaller steps (there are always maddening squishy parts in the middle where I'm not quite sure exactly how I'm going to do Part A without jumping in and starting—and I thus have no idea how to plan Part B), and estimating the time to finish each step (pshhheh... right).
I'm still searching for the book, website, or person who can teach me how to do this. The resources I've looked at seem either too basic ("Set Goals! Break down into Steps! Set Deadlines!" Uh, great. HOW?) or too specifically oriented to a field other than mine (science / academia.)

I’m rather jealous. Setting goals sounds like it's a productive enough idea, but there really is a specific way to go about it to make it effective and I think you've done a great job of outlining it here. Thanks!
