I'm in a rural area about an hour from Kansas City. They use to have delivery, but recently all the newspapers have stopped and have started using mail.

Another thing to check is the local banking. Especially if you're moving to a new area. While it probably doesn't have a lot to do with purchasing a house, you want to know what your options are before you get there.

Also depending on whether you're "green minded" or not, you may want to look at how easily it would be to incorporate some greener technologies (solar, wind, etc) into the house. If you have no yard, then you wouldn't have an option, but if you have a pretty large yard, you could potentially install solar or a small wind turbine. This goes along with the efficiency of the appliances in the house.

A final minor thing is how easily you can change lightbulbs and fix other electrical systems. My parents moved into a house where the light was at the top of the stairs, but the doorbell was at the bottom (about 7 feet up and about three steps up from the lower floor). So, while the light was easy to change, the doorbell was a problem. If your light is on or near the ceiling and it's about five steps in from the floor, you'll likely end up with a burned out bulb that you never want to change.

Have a great day:)

Where have you lived that newspapers came by mail? I've lived in 16 different cities in my life so far, and I've NEVER had a newspaper come by mail. Most of them were morning delivery, sometimes 4:00 am.

Good suggestion.

In my home town there was a school that was about 75 feet from the train tracks. Everyone got to where they would just tune out the 12 o'clock train. It was funny to watch visitors. When the train started coming, the ground would shake, etc. They would look around in a panic, but no one else acted like they could hear anything because they were so use to it.

What local service people do the current owners call? It wouldn't have been a deal breaker for us, but knowing in advance that the sewer line leading into this old house has to be de-rooted two or three times a year would have been very helpful.

Our house is not far from train tracks as well, but thankfully all we have to deal with is whistles. Believe it or not it is possible to tune them out after a while.
