I agree employees shouldn't count on that. But lets educate them for the future so they can share it with the company they join and as they rise through the ranks of leadership they take a more human approach to handling employment decisions such as layoffs and downsizing.

@Marc - I'm not saying you can demand more severance, but you might be able to work out some type of deal. Particularly if you perform some vital function that they may have overlooked.

@Malanie - They should, but employees probably shouldn't count on that.

Excellent article with useful and applicable advice. The flip side is that employers should take a proactive stance and use a human approach to downsizing. They should strategically plan layoffs in a manner that maintains morale, assists transitioning employees and provides sensitivity coaching to managers executing the change.

What a detailed post about how to prepare for the possibility of job loss. It is difficult to think about these issues, but of course we all must, given the current state of the economy. Thanks for writing about this important topic.

Call me naive, but unless you have some sort of contractual agreement, how are you supposed to stand on any kind of footing to demand more severance than what you are given. Maybe it's a state law thing, but I am in an "at will" state and as far as I can see, any severance is a courtesy that one should be thankful for.

Penelope Trunk recently did an article about this also, and one thing she mentioned that I thought was a good idea was to go ahead and get your physical, dental work, etc. if you know ahead of time you may get laid off. You will lose your benefits or have to pay COBRA and that is really expensive, so do it while you can more cheaply.
