My personal favorite that we use for our family is Sugarsync.com. We all have it on both home & work computers and mobile phone access. It’s inexpensive and easy to use and the file transfer is superfast.

@David – Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll check out drop.io sometime. Normally I use Amazon S3, but it takes a bit more technical knowledge to get up and running than the average user is going to want to invest.

@Carlos – Thanks for pointing this out. It sounds like the free version is more geared for people who are sharing a handful of files. If you want to backup your entire computer, you might look at JungleDisk.

Oh – and one more thing: Drop.io is significantly less expensive: $10 per GB per year, for each drop. Box.net’s Professional version is $96 per year for 5GB… and Drop.io is $50 for the same features.

This is a great review of Box.net. Very thorough, and certainly makes the package look attractive.
Given your history of pissing off the entire VA industry, I should probably preface this by saying that I’m not pissed off, nor am I feeling anything other than gratitude for this thorough evaluation of a product.
I just wanted to share with you my favorite file-sharing service, Drop.io (http://drop.io) which is an up-and-coming service that enables an infinite number of drops, complete with some pretty sophisticated file-sharing and security features. Check them out; I’d love to hear what you think.
Thank you for writing what you do; you’ve helped me set up my eight month-old home office, and I couldn’t have done it without you.

Great review! I have been using box.net for quite a while now in the business, and it has certainly made getting files out to clients a lot easier. This is definitely one file sharing site that should be added to every professional’s arsenal!

Have to point out a big (for me) drawback of the free version: you have to download your files one by one. So, if you need to get back on your drive a whole folder, you will spend a good amount of time. Did not know it until I need it… and it was too late.
Now I look for better options, adrive.com looks nice…

Have you checked out DropBox yet? What I really like about it is that you have actual folders on your local computer which sync with their server and the computer of anyone you are sharing with. And, revisions of files can be seen online. Here’s the URL:
