The acceleration works ok for me, but it is still nice having a large mouse pad. I don' t have to pick up my mouse and reposition it nearly as much. I'm only using a 19 inch monitor though.

@Jachim - I haven't used a trackball for about 7 years. Maybe I should try one again. I use to have trackballs on my laptops and I was very disappointed when computers switched to touchpads.

@Lynoure - I've tried making adjustments to the acceleration, but I still find I need a larger mouse area for a larger monitor. Yesterday I finally just got rid of my mouse pad entirely to use the larger area of my keyboard tray.

I'll have to play around with the acceleration settings some more. Perhaps I just haven't hit on the right settings yet.

You can also just adjust the pointer acceleration and pointer threshold to allow longer than tiny movements propel your mouse further. This will keep your desktop area free of a oversized mousepad and will not require larger arm movements like a large mousepad would.

You can find these from K->System Settings->Keyboard&Mouse->Advanced if you are a KDE user. Similar settings exist in similar locations for other desktop environments.

Or try a trackball. No open desk space needed.
